Walking Nakatsu 1-chome, Osaka | A Street That Changes Face at Night

中津1丁目のアイキャッチ

Just one station from Umeda Station on the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line.

When you come up to ground level from the ticket gates underground, you’re on Osaka City Road Nakatsu Taishibashi Line. From there, it continues on to Jokuhoku Park Avenue.

The northwestern part of that road corresponds to “Nakazu 1-chome.”

It’s a triangular piece of land surrounded by three railways: the Hankyu Electric Railway, the JR Osaka Higashi Line, and the Subway Midosuji Line.

大阪市北区中津1丁目

In this small block, there are lots of restaurants and bars, small shops, apartment buildings, and houses all lined up together.

There are some nagaya (traditional wooden row houses) still standing, but they’ve been renovated and turned into restaurants and small offices.

The residential buildings with their everyday living atmosphere and the stylish shops are living side by side, blending nicely into the streetscape.

During the daytime, it’s a laid-back and quiet town.

The people walking around are local residents and folks looking for shops doing lunch service.

When the evening gets late and the lights start coming on in the eating and drinking establishments, the outline changes.

The flat cityscape softly and hazily rises into view, illuminated by the orange lights of the scattered shops.

It’s not as hectic as Umeda.

Even shops I didn’t notice during the daytime are hanging out their noren (shop curtains) and warmly welcoming customers on their way home from work.

A night town that feels comfortable and lets you breathe easy.

A spacious, laid-back kind of place that suits both wandering around alone and drinking by yourself.

A town that I want you to visit multiple times at different hours to feel the difference between its daytime and nighttime faces.
